Decision notice of tree removal - Sunderland Road

Location of tree(s) to be removed

The decision has been made to remove 3 cherry, 3 hawthorn and 4 laburnum trees on Sunderland Road, South Shields.

Reason for removal

The trees are being removed due to the proposed junction improvements under the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).

Further to the Public Consultation which closed on Wednesday the 14 May 2025, the Council has received nine responses to the Public Notice.

The responses have been carefully reviewed and considered by the Council.

While concerns were raised about the environmental impact, the Council's assessment confirms that the trees are in poor health.

The scheme's benefits, including improved bus reliability, accessibility, and support for sustainable travel, are considered to outweigh any environmental harm that may be caused by the removal of the trees.

In addition to this work, the Council will also remove five trees that pose a safety risk due to their poor structural condition which fall outside of the schemes boundary but are within the central reservation.

Removal of the tree(s)

The trees will be removed within 2 years from 16 May 2025, but no sooner than 28 days from this date.

In line with the Council's Tree and Woodland Policy, replacement trees will be planted in an appropriate location.
