The proposal includes:

  • no entry from Mortimer Road into Cauldwell Avenue, South Shields
  • no waiting and no loading or unloading on Mortimer Road and Cauldwell Avenue, South Shields
  • construction of Puffin Crossing on Mortimer Road, South Shields
  • construction of raised table on Cauldwell Avenue, South Shields

Legal notice

South Tyneside Council (Mortimer Road and Cauldwell Avenue, South Shields) Order 2025

South Tyneside Council proposes to make an Order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and all other enabling powers.

The effect of the Order will be to:

  • introduce no entry from Mortimer Road, South Shields into Cauldwell Avenue, South Shields; 
  • introduce no waiting at any time and no loading/unloading at any time on:
    • Mortimer Road, South Shields
      • northeast side from a point 15 metres northwest of the junction radii with Cauldwell Avenue in a south easterly direction for a distance of 15 metres;
      • southwest side from a point 8 metres northwest of the junction radii with Mortimer Primary School Access Road in a south easterly direction for a distance of 8 metres. 
    • Cauldwell Avenue, South Shields
      • northwest side from its junction radii with Mortimer Road in a north easterly direction for a distance of 12 metres;
      • southeast side from its junction with Mortimer Road in a north easterly direction for a distance of 29 metres.
    • Mortimer Primary School Access Road, South Shields
      • southeast side from its junction radii with Mortimer Road in a south westerly direction for a distance of 8 metres;
      • northwest side from its junction radii with Mortimer Road in a south westerly direction for a distance of 9 metres.

Full details of these proposals are contained in the draft order which, together with a plan showing the lengths of road affected and a statement of the Council's reasons for proposing to make the Order, may be inspected from Monday to Friday during normal office hours at the Town Hall at the address below.

South Tyneside Council Notice of Proposed Puffin Crossing and Raised Table

Mortimer Road and Cauldwell Avenue, South Shields 2025

Notice is hereby given that South Tyneside Council, after consultation with the Chief Officer of Police proposes under Section 23 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to install a new puffin crossing in the location described in Schedule 1 below and proposes under sections 90A and 90C of the Highways Act 1980 and the Highways (Road Humps) Regulations 1999 to install a raised table in the location described in Schedule 2 below.

SCHEDULE 1

New Puffin Crossing

Mortimer Road, South Shields

The centre of the crossing is to be located 10 metres south of the centre of its junction with Cauldwell Avenue

 

Associated zig-zag markings on which vehicles would be prohibited from stopping at all times will be marked either side of the crossing extending up to 13.5 metres north westwards and 13.5 metres south eastwards.

SCHEDULE 2

New Raised Table

Cauldwell Avenue, South Shields

The centre of the crossing is to be located 4.25 metres northeast of its junction with Mortimer Road.

 

The raised crossing plateaux will consist of a raised surface above the existing carriageway for the full width of the road located 2 metres northeast of its junction with Mortimer Road for a distance of 4.75 metres in a north easterly direction with ramps measuring 2 metres in length.
