Overview
School nurses are special community nurses.
They offer support for children in school, young people, and their families.
Their job includes improving health and wellbeing, reducing inequalities, and supporting vulnerable children.
They play an important role in keeping children safe and supporting local safeguarding guidelines.

Services they provide
ChatHealth
ChatHealth is a confidential text messaging service for anyone aged 11 to 19 years old. They offer support for issues, including:
- Relationships
- Exam stress
- Bullying
- Sexual health
- Self-harm
- Physical needs

Health promotion
They deliver:
- Local and national public health campaigns
- Tailor-made health promotion sessions for each school
- Growing up and puberty sessions
Continence support
They support:
- Children who have toilet problems
- Schools when a child needs a care plan for their toilet issues
- Signposting or referring on if needs be
Children with additional needs
They create care plans for schools if a child has an allergy and is at risk of an allergic reaction.
They will have a prescription for adrenaline auto-injectors for emergency use from their doctor or consultant.
Partnership working
They work in partnership with other professionals to offer support and advice in:
- Education
- Healthcare
- Social care
- Family hubs
They can also help to signpost or refer to the correct service.
They are available throughout the year, including school holidays, and offer a single point of contact (SPOC) for parents or professionals.
