Become a Personal Assistant in South Tyneside

We have a range of Personal Assistant (PA) job roles available through our Direct Payments service users. 

A Personal Assistant (PA) is someone who can support an older or disabled person to give them more independence and live their life more fully. PAs need to be good listeners, with a willingness to learn and respond.

The job can be very flexible, offering part or full-time work on different days and at different times. Some PAs work part-time, alongside another job. The role is also suitable for a student or retired person wanting a few hours a week.

The duties of a Personal Assistant vary widely and depend on your client - what kinds of support they need and when. We currently have vacancies working with children and young people and adults offering a range of social time only posts or mixed care packages including personal care and social time.

Enhanced DBS clearance is required for all posts with children and young people.

Personal Assistant x 1 (Job reference: 2017053CR)

We are looking for a female personal assistant to support an 18 year old female who has a lower body disability and uses a wheel chair.

This person is living at home with her parents and would like an outgoing personal assistant to be more independent. Hobbies and likes are having pub lunches, going to the cinema, museums and cafes.

The role of the PA is to offer support in accessing the community and social events, like concerts and live bands. They may need some personal care, however this person is very independent.

A driver is preferred but, can use public transport.

There is a dog present in the family home.

Personal Assistant x 1 (Job reference: 107384CR)

We are looking for a male personal assistant to support a 19 year old autistic female.

This person is living independently and is training to be a teaching assistant. This person enjoys listening to music, gaming and animals.

Your role would be to encourage accessing the community, provide support at home, attending meetings, accompanying on appointments and support to work. 

As this person's PA you will need to have autism awareness and understanding, as this person on occasions struggles with communicating with others, mental health issues and CPTSD. 

A driver is essential for this post. 

There are no pets at this property but a small family dog is there on occasions.

Personal Assistant x 2 (Job reference: 194385MT/SW)

We have twin brothers aged 15 needing support from a personal assistant. The first twin needs support in accessing the community, taking into consideration their sensory needs. 

Hobbies are playing chess, gaming, technology and learning maths and science. They like to discuss up to date relevant topics and in detail about computers.

This personal assistant will need to be understanding as certain situations can cause anxiety, as they struggle with loud noises and bright lights.

An understanding or experience working with young people with Autism would be preferred. This young person feels apprehensive about leaving the house since COVID-19 however recently has started to access the community and would like support with this.

The second twin is very outgoing, liking to ride outside on his bike doing stunts and playing with friends. They also like to listen to heavy metal music and playing instruments.

The second personal assistant would need to have a good level of understanding when accompanying them when accessing the community, as they can feel quite anxious and very over-whelmed in certain situations.

Looking for a personal assistant who could encourage and support the boys in exercise, for example, to go for walks and perhaps go to a gym.

Personal Assistant x1 (Job reference: 186702MT/CR)

A 36 year old lady with MS is looking for a female Personal Assistant to support her in her daily life. This person requires support with her personal care, her nutritional needs and general well-being.

This person is wheelchair bound and uses a hoist for transfers. Moving and handling experience preferred however training will be provided.

Her interests are listening to music and watching movies. She would like someone to accompany on social outings in the community using public transport.

You would be required to have nomad medication administering experience would be ideal. On the job training will be provided.

There are no pets at this property.

A driver is not essential.

Parents are in attendance as needed.

We are looking for a female support worker, for a 55 year old lady with mobility issues.

This person needs assistance in moving around their home and possibly to accompany them in accessing the community and maintaining her religious beliefs. 

This person requires support in the home mainly for cleaning, meal preparations and general home help. 

We are looking for someone with similar interests like cooking, enjoying nature, meditation and essential oil blending. 

There is a pet living at this property.

You will need to have a professional, positive and respectful attitude for this post.

Personal Assistant (Job reference: 189963CR)

Support worker required to join a team of PAs to support a young lady with a brain injury. This lady lives in her own property and requires 24 hour continued support with recovery, activities and appointments. Care is provided on a team rota system in advance so flexibility will be required. However it is important that a slow introduction is established before overnight shifts can be introduced (this will be discussed at interview). Essential to hold driving license to transport in mobility car.

Personal Assistant x 1 (Job reference: 203733CR)

We are looking for a personal assistant to support a 57 year old gentleman who has had a stroke and needs assistance within his own home and accessing the wider community.

Your role will be to help him improve his self-confidence and mental wellbeing. This gentleman requires support with maintaining personal care (applying ointment creams), developing and maintaining family or other personal relationships, accessing and engaging in work, training, education or volunteering, making use of the necessary facilities or services in the local community including public transport, recreational facilities or services, organising correspondence, attending appointments.

Personal Assistant x 1 (Job reference: 77084CR)

We are looking for a female personal assistant to support a 65 year old lady who has MS and is living with her husband.

Your role would be to provide a sitting service / companionship or to take this lady out to the shops or visit family. This lady uses a wheelchair when out in the community so there will be some moving and handling required when making transfers.

Moving, handling and knowledge of MS would be beneficial to this post. A driver would be preferred but not essential, there will be a contributions made for petrol costs.

Personal Assistant x 1 (Job reference: 2023574CR)

We are looking for a personal assistant to support a 33 year old female who has severe ADHD, Insomnia, Dyslexia, chronic pain and allergies. This person requires support in their home environment, with education, correspondence and improving their overall wellbeing.

You will need to be motivational, think logistically and have good organisational and communication skills. You will be required in assisting to contact providers in helping to maintain their home.

Due to this person's disabilities, they need help with focus and direction. This person attends university two days a week, where they will also need support in meeting written targets.

A female personal assistant is preferred but a male would be considered for the right person. A driver is non-essential.

Hours: 8hrs per week, days and times to be agreed (excluding Thursdays and Fridays)

Personal Care Assistant

A female Personal Assistant to support a female who is in her eighties, and lives in her own home.

She requires 24 / 7 care, and the family currently provides most of that care. Initially the family are looking for a Personal Assistant for support for at least two nights a week and possibly some evenings.

  • Specific nights: To be confirmed with family
  • Hours: 10pm to 9am
  • Holiday: 5.6 weeks per year (pro rata)
  • Hourly rate: £10 per hour

The role will principally involve support with personal care, toileting, and changing our mother's pads, clothing and / or bedding if and when required during the night. Previous care experience is preferred, and moving and handling experience is required as our mother uses equipment such as a returner for transfers to and from her bed.

Personal Assistants x 1 / 2 (Job reference: 222896CR)

We are looking for two female personal assistants to support a 54 year old gentleman in his own home and out socially in the community. This gentleman has cervical myelopathy and is wheelchair dependant.

They require support in the mornings to shower, dress, apply cream and massage legs, administer medication and breakfast preparation (cereal).

In the evenings support is required to dress for bed and meal preparation (ready meal). It is important to this gentleman to access the community, going out for walks, cinema, gym and meals. The gentleman can walk small short distances with support and a zimmer frame.

This post would suit someone with similar interests and a driver with access to their own vehicle will be required. There are no pets at the property currently, although they are looking at rehoming a cat. As this post is 7 days a week it could be shared between two people.

  • Hours: 12.45hrs per week: Monday to Sunday 45 minutes in the morning (approx 9.30am to 10.15am), 30 minutes in the evening (approx 5pm to 5.30pm), 4 hours social time (days and times to be agreed flexibly)

Personal Assistant x 1 (Job reference: 2020140 CR/JR)

We are looking for a personal assistant (male or female) to support a 45 year old gentleman with a mental health condition.

Your role will be to support and encourage this person to engage in the community around activities, work, training or volunteering. This person lacks motivation to look into groups and engage in them so you will need to be pro-active and consistent to maintain hobbies and being more active in the community.

Without consistent input to go into the community and try new things there is a chance that their mental health could deteriorate. This person used to teach languages abroad and is fluent in various languages.

They used to be a ski instructor and has in the past attended surfing lessons. At home this person requires support with maintaining his home environment, making nutritional meals and building their skills around improving their diet.

Training around mental health conditions and how to support someone who experiences these would be beneficial.  A driver for this post is preferred. There are no pets at this property.

Personal Assistants x 2 (Job reference: 224053CR)

We are looking for x 2 Personal Assistants to support an 11 year old boy who has a diagnosis of ASD with associated anxieties and learning difficulties out in the community.

This person is predominantly non-verbal and uses a communication aid and a little Makaton to communicate along with sounds, pointing and leading.

They live with their mum and 5 dogs. They enjoy listening to music, playing with cars and on the PS5 and Switch Consoles.

This post is for social time as they love to be out and about and loves watching motorbikes, going for drives and walks. A favourite place to go to is  the fair, beack and will enjoy going to McDonalds and KFC.

There is a need for 2 PAs, male and female or two males as this person is a strong 11 year old boy who can at times display some challenging behaviours, where 2:1 support would be needed to keep him safe.

Experience of working with Children and Young People with ASD and anxieties is a must and a driver is essential.

Hours: Saturday support initially 12noon until 2pm (2 hours), building up to 10am until 2pm (4 hours) when a relationship with the 2 PAs has developed. The times can be flexible.

This post is initially for 12 a month period.

Private job vacancy

I am a 30-year old male looking for a male P.A to support me for 5 hours per week to access community activities and transportation. These include accessing a social gamming group for a card game and using public transport.

I wish to build my confidence in using public transport therefore need the reassurance of an understanding P.A to accompany me throughout the bus or metro journey. At present I experience anxiety in these situations.

A caring, compassionate approach is essential to this role as well as a good understanding of the issues and barriers relating to anxiety. Experience in a caring role is desirable, however more importantly are the personal qualities of a calm, reasurring approach.

The rate of pay for this post is £12 per hour and any expenses incurred durring working hours will be paid.

There is no personal care support required for this role.

The support is required on Fridays 5pm to 7.30pm, and Tuesday 1.30pm to 4pm, however these times may be subject to change.

1 x Domestic Personal Assistant (Job reference: 806CR)

We are looking for a female personal assistant to complete domestic support for a 74 year old lady and her husband, within their own home. You must have a caring, patient and compassionate nature with experience of mental health conditions including hoarding would be beneficial.

Your responsibilities will be to provide domestic support that will include essential weekly tasks, such as vacuuming, cleaning floors and dusting, however other domestic duties will also be required as and when needed.

This role is for 3 hours per week but you will need to flexible around those hours as they may change from week to week.  There are no pets at the property, and a none smoker is preferred.

Personal Assistant x 1 (Job reference: 2009404CR)

We are looking for a personal assistant to support a 76 year old man who has Alzheimers and Epilepsy.

This gentleman lives with his wife who takes care of all of his care needs with the support of a personal care team who attend to his personal care and hoisting transfers.

We are looking for an individual who can support his social needs within his own home to give his wife some respite so she can go out.

This gentleman generally likes a quiet, warm environment and spends most of their time sitting in their chair sleeping. Occasionally they enjoy listening to music also.

Due to this gentleman being housebound, they do require hoisting to transfer however this is covered by their personal care care provider and therefore you will not be required for transfers or personal hygiene. The care team will be accessing the property to fulfil their role whilst you are supporting.

Your roles and responsibilities will include administration of medication, preparing and giving meals and drinks. This gentleman has a meal time risk reduction plan that must be adhered to and training for both these tasks will be provided.

Some awareness of dementia would be desirable but not essential.

There are no pets at the property.

Hours: 8 hours per week for 52 weeks. This is to work flexibly over a 7 day period which could include evenings (you will also be expected to cover holidays and sickness leave for the other personal assistant)

1 x Personal Assistant (female preferred) (Job reference: 21773CR)

We are looking for a personal assistant to support a 38 year old male who has cerebral palsy and learning difficulties. This gentleman will need support with all aspects of personal care as he is doubly incontinent and uses incontinence pads. Part of your role and responsibilities will be to wash, shave and dress this gentleman. Experience of using a hoist is essential. This gentleman spends a lot of time on the floor so you will be expected to be able to support this gentleman at his level. There are no pets at the property.

  • Hours: 6 hours in total per week for 52 weeks a year

3 calls per day Monday / Thursday / Saturday: 45 minutes between 7.30am and 8am; 30 minutes lunch at approximately 12noon; 45 minutes between 4pm and 4.30pm.

You will also be expected to cover holidays and sickness leave for other personal assistant.

1 x Personal Assistant (Job reference: 2014214CR)

We are looking for a personable carer for a man who is 36 years old and suffers from cerebral palsy. He is a good communicator with a good sense of humour and is passionate about football and loves to participate with friends playing pool and dominoes. He needs to be warm at all times and cannot be outside in very windy weather. 

Some personal care will be required, for example general hand and foot care, shaving and being assisted to the barbers at least once every 6 weeks. Someone who drives is essential, ideally who lives close to Whitburn who can help explore the possibilities of future activities such as walking football which takes place in Newcastle. 

The successful applicant will require a DBS check and be able to get on well with cats.

I am looking for a male personal assistant / friend to share activities with. I am forty years old and have eczema and ASD. I am looking for someone to support me to overcome my difficulties of going to places and meeting with people by myself.

I would like someone that is interested in building scale model kits, like Warhammer and Planes, and painting. I enjoy trips to local parks with my radio controlled boats.

I enjoy trips to local cafes that I know and enjoy tea and snacks in familiar places. I enjoy walking by the seafront and in the parks.

1 x Personal Assistant (Job reference: 2005616CR)

We are looking for a personal assistant (M/F) to support a 33 year old male who has epilepsy and autism. Experience of epilepsy and / or autism would be beneficial but not essential. The hours are 5 hours per week, however you will need to be flexible in your working approach and adaptable to any sudden change of plans. Your duties will be to assist as and when required depending on how this person is feeling "at that time", especially after seizures, with their moods being up and down, or even outright refusal if this person is feeling particularly unwell. Help with formal contacts, applications, making appointments, dealing with officialdom/post and anything that they otherwise wouldn't do because it's stressful. You will support with help around the home, advice on cooking, cleaning and encouragement with motivation "to do things" including external activities such as shopping. A driver is not essential for this post.

  • Hours: 5hrs per week (flexibly - to be arranged between PA and Employer on a week-to-week  basis)

We are looking for a Personal Assistant who can support a power chair user, adult male (42) who seeks a person to act as a driver (person has own mobility vehicle) and companion. Hours are 16 in total, normally 2 eight hour days, usually Tuesday and Sunday, but you will need to be flexible due to the person's wide range of activities and interests, hours and days can vary with the possibility of more hours.

PA will be responsible for driving to:

We are looking for a Personal Assistant to work with a 12 year old girl  who requires support with getting ready for school on morning. Support will also be to ensure she is ready for school transport or to be transported by the PA, whichever is preferred.
