Thurston Outdoor Education Centre: Administration of medication policy

Revised: January 2022

Participants with medication needs should have a health care plan drawn up by the visiting organisation and the administration of such medication will be the responsibility of the group organiser.

The centre will provide secure and / or refrigerated storage facilities for medication if so required.

Visiting leaders will provide and administer any medication required, and agreed, to young people on a course. These will only be administered to those participants whose parents / guardians have indicated this possibility on the consent form. The decision whether to allow the use of such medication will be taken by the group organiser. Visiting leaders are responsible for keeping all records of medication given.

No other medication will be available at the centre.

If, whilst visiting the centre, participants are prescribed medication by a doctor, centre or visiting staff will attempt to make contact with the parents/guardians to discuss the situation. Medication will be administered by the visiting leaders or by those centre staff who are willing to take on this role.

With reference to autoinjectors ("Epipens") all instructional staff are suitably qualified first aiders.
