Coronavirus (COVID-19): Get a PCR test

Overview

You should get a free PCR test if you have COVID symptoms.

Get a test

Visit the government website to:

  • order a PCR test kit to be sent to your home, or
  • book an appointment at a test site

Tests for children

COVID-19 tests are available to children. It is important children are tested if they have symptoms.

The at-home tests involve a nasal and throat swab. They should be carried out by an adult on children aged 11 and under.

Local testing sites

There are two local testing sites - there is a site in South Shields and a site in Jarrow. 

Do not go to a test site without booking.

Mobile testing unit

There is also a mobile testing unit at Temple Park Centre car park, South Shields.

Do not go to a mobile test site without booking.

The unit is open Monday to Friday.

What to do with your result

Most people get their result the next day, but it may take up to 3 days.

You'll usually get a text or email with your result when it's ready.
