From Monday 19 July, COVID-19 measures will continue in Council libraries. 

We ask that you continue to wear a face covering, unless exempt. 

Pre-booking is required for book collections, group activities, use of study spaces and library computers. No appointment is needed for dropping off or browsing books, although time is limited.

This will stay in place until at least 16 August. For more information, see Council Caution to Protect Customers, Services and Staff - Thursday 15 July 2021.

All four Council libraries in South Tyneside are open.

You must book an appointment to: 

  • Collect pre-ordered books
  • Use a library computer
  • Use a study space

You can browse books without an appointment.

Some events are now taking place in our libraries. You must book if you want to attend. See library activities.

The cafe at The Word is open with a limited number of tables. For opening hours, see The Word.

Book a slot: Pre-order books

To collect books, you must pre-order over the phone. We will give you an appointment time to collect your books.

The collection area is at the front door of the library. 

To pre-order, phone the library you want to collect books from:

You can take out a maximum of 12 books at one time.

Book a slot: Use a library computer

You can make an appointment to use a public computer for essential use. 

Slots are 2 hours long. The last slots can be booked 45 minutes before closing.

Book a slot: Study space

You can book a study space at The Word and Hebburn Central Library.

Study spaces are available for 2 hours a day per customer.

Browse books

You don't need to book an appointment to browse books.

Browsing time is limited and there is nowhere to sit and read.

At The Word, the second floor will open again on 26 July 2021.

There is a wide range of books available.

Regular cleaning takes place throughout the day.

Renew or return books

You can drop off books at the library without an appointment. The drop off area is at the front door of the library. 

To renew your book over the phone, contact The Word Library on 0191 427 1818. You can also renew online

You can hold onto books until restrictions are lifted. You will not get new fines at this time.

    Online library services and educational resources

    You can still use the range of online services available. Find out more about our eBooks, eAudiobooks and online magazines.

    If you are not a South Tyneside library member, you can join the library online.

    Some libraries in the UK are providing online services like live rhyme time sessions and online story times.
