All four Council libraries in South Tyneside are open. You must book an appointment before visiting a library.

You can book an appointment to: 

  • Collect pre-ordered books
  • Use a library computer
  • Browse books
  • Use a study space

Some events are now taking place in our libraries. You must book if you want to attend. To see what events are taking place, see library activities.

Face coverings are mandatory in libraries, with some exceptions. For full details see Government guidance on face coverings.

Toilets are open for library users only. 

No other public facilities are available. Cafes are closed and seating is unavailable until further notice.

Strict social distancing rules must be observed.

You must book a slot before visiting, unless you are returning books.

Return and collect pre-ordered books

The drop off and collection area is at the front door of the library. 

You can drop off books at the library without an appointment. 

To collect books, you must pre-order over the phone. We will give you an appointment time to collect your books.

To pre-order, phone the library you want to collect books from:

You can take out a maximum of 12 books at one time.

Use a library computer

You can make an appointment to use a public computer for essential use.

Browse books

To browse books, you must book a slot. Browsing time is limited and there is nowhere to sit and read.

There is a wide range of books available.

All shelves will be emptied and cleaned at the end of each day. 

Renew books

To renew your book over the phone, contact The Word Library on 0191 427 1818.

You can also renew online

You can hold onto books until restrictions are lifted. You will not get new fines at this time.

Study space

You can book a study space at The Word and Hebburn Central Library.

Study spaces are available for 2 hours a day per customer.
