Overview

Humankind supports young carers and young adult carers (aged between 4 and 24 years old) and their families, to reduce the impact of their caring responsibilities.

They:

  • offer information, advice and emotional support
  • deliver training and awareness-raising to professionals.

The service aims to:

  • identify hidden young carers
  • improve the quality of Young Carers lives
  • protect Young Carers from inappropriate caring roles
  • reduce isolation
  • improve confidence and self esteem
  • improve emotional and physical health of young carers
  • increase awareness of issues and difficulties faced
  • improve attendance and attainment
  • support young adult carers with transition into adulthood

Support available

The service can help young carers and young adult carers with:

  • support to identify future goals and aspirations
  • advocacy
  • information, advice and guidance
  • activities to give young carers a break from their caring role
  • meeting people in similar situations
  • support to access other services

Support for people with special educational needs and disabilities

The service make any reasonable adjustments as identified by the young person, their family, the referrer, or other professionals involved. 

Depending on the young person's needs and preference, the service can offer support:

  • through one-to-one sessions in the home, school or other community buildings
  • online
  • by phone

Who can access the service

Any young person:

  • in caring role
  • aged between 4 and 24 years old
  • who lives in South Tyneside

How to access the service

Anyone can make a referral to the service.

The referral will be given to a keyworker and they will contact the young person / parent to discuss the next steps.

The service will then make an appointment to complete a young carer's assessment.
