The Register Office is still closed to the public, except by appointment only.
If you need to contact us, please call 0191 424 6350 or email email@example.com. We are getting back to messages quickly, so please get in touch and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
At the Register Office, we continue to use measures to limit the transmission of COVID-19:
Please sanitise your hands when entering and leaving the Register Office.
We strongly encourage you to wear a face covering when in the building.
If you have tested positive for COVID-19, have been asked by NHS Test and Trace to self-isolate, or if you or anyone you live with are displaying any symptoms of COVID-19, do not attend the Register Office and please contact us to rearrange your appointment.
If you are showing COVID-19 symptoms when you attend the Register Office, we'll ask you to leave and to rearrange your appointment.
If you have received both vaccinations or have had a recent negative PCR Test, please let staff know when you book your appointment. We may ask you to provide evidence of vaccination and/or negative test status.
Face coverings must be worn by those attending a ceremony in the Register Office, unless exempt (except for the bride, groom or civil partners and those conducting the ceremony).
Copies of certificates
You can get copies of birth, death or marriage certificates from the Register Office.
Our priority certificate service is operating as normal. Order by telephone on 0191 424 6350. Please pay by card over the phone if you can.
Certificates cannot currently be bought or collected from the Register Office. All certificates will be sent out by post.
Marriages and civil partnerships
The Register Office is still operating with reduced capacity in its ceremony rooms. This is to minimise the risk of exposure for all persons attending a marriage or civil partnership, including our staff who are officiating the ceremony.
The Barrington Suite has a capacity of 35 and the Garden Room has a capacity of 15 until further notice.
These capacities will be reviewed regularly.
Weddings can take place outside in the Garden at the Register Office, where the capacity is 15.
We are contacting couples by phone to discuss their options.
Notice of Marriage and Civil Partnership
This service is by appointment only.
We will continue to prioritise couples whose ceremonies have been cancelled or affected by COVID-19, to allow them to rebook and give new Notice of Marriage or Civil Partnership where needed.
New notices can be booked subject to availability.
Registering a death
Until further notice, you can register a death by telephone appointment only.
Birth registrations continue to be by appointment only.
We continue to register births in person and with measures to minimise the transmission of Covid-19.
Copies of birth certificates can be purchased at your appointment which cost £11 each. We are currently accepting card payments only.
If you are attending an appointment to register a birth, please follow the guidelines below:
If you are married or in a civil partnership only one parent should attend to register the birth
If you are not married or in a civil partnership both parents should attend
For the safety of your family and Register Office staff you should not bring your baby, other children or family members to the appointment with you. If you bring any other person to the appointment, they will not be able to access to the Register Office
