Copies of certificates

You can get copies of birth, death or marriage certificates from the Register Office.

Our priority certificate service is operating as normal. Order by telephone on 0191 424 6350. Please pay by card over the phone if you can.

Certificates cannot currently be bought or collected from the Register Office. All certificates will be sent out by post.

Marriages and civil partnerships

The Register Office is still operating with reduced capacity in its ceremony rooms. This is to minimise the risk of exposure for all persons attending a marriage or civil partnership, including our staff who are officiating the ceremony.

The Barrington Suite has a capacity of 35 and the Garden Room has a capacity of 15 until further notice.

These capacities will be reviewed regularly.

Weddings can take place outside in the Garden at the Register Office, where the capacity is 15.

We are contacting couples by phone to discuss their options.

Notice of Marriage and Civil Partnership

This service is by appointment only.

We will continue to prioritise couples whose ceremonies have been cancelled or affected by COVID-19, to allow them to rebook and give new Notice of Marriage or Civil Partnership where needed.

New notices can be booked subject to availability.
