Election Process Gets Underway in South Tyneside

The Returning Officer for Parliamentary Elections, the Mayor of South Tyneside, has received the official writs from Her Majesty the Queen ahead of the General Election on 12 December for the constituencies of South Shields and Jarrow.

Martin Swales, Chief Executive of South Tyneside Council is the Acting Returning Officer for Parliamentary Elections and is responsible for the conduct of the general election and return of the writs confirming the names of the elected Members of Parliament.

The official writs are issued on behalf of the Queen by the Clerk of the Crown in Chancery at the Palace of Westminster and, according to custom and law, are delivered by Royal Mail to the Mayor of the Borough.

The candidate nomination period starts on Friday 8 November with nominations closing at 4pm on Thursday 14 November.

Chief Executive, Martin Swales, said: "Receipt of the writs means the Parliamentary Election process is now underway in South Tyneside.

"Residents must register to vote by midnight on Tuesday 26 November to ensure they can take part in the forthcoming election and decide who represents them in Parliament.

"Registering online is an easy and more convenient way to register. It only takes a few minutes at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote on a computer, smartphone or tablet. Alternatively people can register by calling our Customer Contact Centre on 0191 4277000."

Residents who have not signed up to vote must apply to be added to the electoral register by the deadline of Tuesday 26 November, in order to cast their vote on Election Day. Under the Individual Electoral Registration system, everyone is responsible for registering themselves. Those registering need to prove their identity by providing their name, address, National Insurance number and date of birth.

The last day to apply for postal voting is 5pm onTuesday 26 November. The last day for proxy vote applications is 5pm on Wednesday 4 December.

Polling day is Thursday 12 December and polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm. Votes will be counted at Temple Park Centre.
