Christmas Light Switch-ons Set to Sparkle in South Tyneside
South Tyneside kicks off its festive celebrations next month with a series of light switch-on events due to get underway across its town centres.
Thousands are expected to gather for the official Christmas lights switch-on events in South Shields, Jarrow and Hebburn town centres with the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside, Councillor Norman Dick and Mrs Jean Williamson, and a host of festive music and entertainment.
The Mayor said: "The Christmas light switch-on events across South Tyneside are guaranteed to be spectacular with a colourful display of lights sparkling through each town. There is always a great festive atmosphere at the events and it's a fantastic way to mark the beginning of the festive season.
"We look forward to seeing everyone there to enjoy the festive entertainment, have fun and celebrate this special time of year."
On Thursday 21 November, 6 - 7pm, 90s pop group, East 17, renowned for their chart-topping Christmas hit, Stay Another Day, will join the Mayor and Mayoress to turn on the town's festive displays in South Shields Market Square. The band will also be performing many of their greatest hits during the evening and will be fronted by Robbie Craig of Artful Dodger fame.
Joining the festive trio - which consists of Robbie Craig, Terry Coldwell and Joe Livermore - on stage will be local performers including the talented Choirmaster group and a special appearance by characters from this year's The Customs House panto, Snow White.
On Friday 22 November, the official switch on of Jarrow's festive light display will take place at Jarrow Town Hall from 4 - 5pmand the Hebburn lights switch-on will take place on Monday 25 November, from 4pm - 5pm in Fountains Park.
Other key highlights of this year's Christmas Wonderland programme include the Camel Parade on Friday 6 December at 5pm, Ocean Road, South Shields.
Families can also enjoy the traditional Civic Carol Concert on Monday 2 December and the Christmas Fair at Haven Point on Saturday 16 November until Sunday 17 November.There will also be festive activities at The Word, National Centre for the Written Word, Hebburn Central and Jarrow town centre entertainment with classic carols and seasonal songs from school choirs and bands.
South Tyneside's Christmas Wonderland programme is being delivered by South Tyneside Council, in partnership with BBC Newcastle and with support from Colmans Fish and Chips and Colmans Seafood Temple.
