South Tyneside is set for an exciting festive season with the return of its Christmas Wonderland programme of events.
South Tyneside Council plans to make this festive season one to remember with a great variety of family-friendly events to draw people to the Borough and to ensure those going about their Christmas shopping have some festive joy to add to their day.
The Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor Norman Dick, said: "The festive season is always such an exciting time in South Tyneside. We have many fantastic events happening throughout the season where children and families can celebrate and have fun.
"We'll be encouraging everyone to join in with the festivities and hope everyone has a brilliant time. South Tyneside really is the place to be this Christmas."
This year's Christmas Wonderland includes the spectacular festive lights switch on events in the Borough's three town centres of South Shields (Thursday 21 November), Jarrow (Friday 22 November), and Hebburn (Monday 25 November).
The popular Camel Parade will also return for the sixth year running on Friday 6 December where visitors can line the route along Ocean Road to Harbour Drive, next to Haven Point. There will be an assortment of family-friendly entertainment such as the impressive Spark! drummers and Creative Seed's fabulous stilt walkers. The event will end with a sensational firework display once the camels have left the seafront.
The Camel Parade features domesticated camels from a specialist, reputable company with the highest standards in animal welfare and training. They are well looked after by their handlers who have more than 40 years' experience and an outstanding track record for events across the country. On the day of the parade, a vet is engaged to inspect the animals' welfare. They also remain in the care of their handlers at all times to ensure the safety of both the animals and public.
The annual Christmas Fair will also return to Haven Point on Saturday 16 November to Sunday 17 Novemberwith a vast range of stalls selling beautiful arts and crafts, jewellery, decorations and festive food.
Other events taking place include the Civic Carol Service on Monday 2 December at Temple Park Centre as well as festive activities at The Word, National Centre of the Written Word, Hebburn Central and Jarrow town centre entertainment with classic carols and seasonal songs from school choirs and bands.
The South Shields lights switch on event is always such a popular event with thousands of people gathering in the Market Place to help kick start the town's festivities.
To ensure everything is ship shape for the November lights switch on events, the Council and its street lighting partners Balfour Beatty are starting their preparation work. The six-week installation programme includes testing, repairing and putting up a number of motifs, displays and garlands and Christmas trees across the Borough.
The Christmas Wonderland 2019 events programme has been organised by South Tyneside Council in partnership with BBC Newcastle and with support from Colmans Fish and Chips and Colmans Seafood Temple.
More details on the events will be announced in the coming weeks.
