About this course
Teaching for Mastery is underpinned by the principle that children will acquire a deep, long term and adaptable understanding of Maths.
This programme will look in detail at key areas of the curriculum and how a mastery approach can be adopted in each area. Every session will include a taster lesson and will offer participants time to plan approaches and activities for their own classes. We will also explore the big ideas children need to grasp in these areas before they move on and how to plan for these. Language and stem sentences will be explored alongside key representations that can be used, all of which help children to develop a deeper understanding. Finally we will look at how depth for all children can be planned for in a lesson.
By the end of this course participants will:
explore three areas of the curriculum (Multiplication & Division, Fractions, Measure) in detail and understand the big ideas children need to grasp in these areas before they move on
explore key vocabulary for each curriculum area and how the use of stem sentences can support a child's understanding of a mathematical concept
understand how depth for all can be achieved within a lesson
develop practical ideas and routines to embed these approaches into their classroom practice
have an opportunity to discuss and share practice with colleagues
Expected Impact on School/Setting:
Improve pupil achievement through teachers'
