Pay and benefits of joining the Adult Social Care Team


The following salaries are per annum for 2019/20, based on working 37 hours per week (including Pay Award):

  • Operations Managers: £48,530 pa
  • Assistant Managers: £39,782 - £41,675 pa
  • Advanced Practitioners: £39,782 - £41,675 pa
  • Approved Mental Health Practitioners (AMHP): £38,813 pa
  • Social Worker: £32,029 - £36,876 pa
  • Occupational Therapist: £32,029 - £36,876 pa
  • Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE): £29,636 - £31,371 pa

Local Government Pension Scheme

  • We offer membership to the LGPS, which is administered by the Tyne and Wear Pension Fund and provides a pension for life that increases with the cost of living. Contributions range from 5.5% to 12.5% depending on your earnings
  • Life Cover of three times annual salary if you die in service
  • Ill Health Retirement Cover where if you retire due to ill health you could receive immediate benefits
  • Voluntary Early Retirement - from age 60 or from age 55 with your employers consent
  • Redundancy Cover - with the early payment of pension benefits if you are made redundant at age 55 or over

Annual leave

  • Employees receive 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, increasing to 30 days after 5 years' service (Pro rata if part time)

Flexible / Work life balance

  • South Tyneside Council provides a range of flexible working options to help you balance work and home, including working part time or job share or compressed hours
  • We also offer a flexible working hour's scheme, where employees may vary their start and finish times, subject to operational needs, providing up to 2 days flexi leave per month
  • We also give you the option of working on-site with your team, at home, or hot-desking at another location; subject to operational needs and with agreement from your line manager
  • We recognise that some of our employees will have caring responsibilities for children or seriously ill or disabled dependent relatives, partners or close friends. South Tyneside Council will give sympathetic consideration to requests for support from those who have caring responsibilities and provide a range of policies to support you, such as parental leave, leave of absence or special leave and compassionate leave
  • Tax Free Child Care Scheme - Employees are able to open an online account, which they can pay into to cover the cost of childcare with a registered provider. This will be done through the government website, GOV.UK
  • South Tyneside Council recognises the valuable contribution that members of the Reserve Forces (Reservists) can make to the UK Armed Forces, their communities and the civilian workplace. As part of our reservists policy we provide up to 2 weeks paid leave per rolling year (pro-rata for part-time employees) to enable them to attend their annual training camp

To achieve silver status, the Council had to show it was embedding health and wellbeing into the organisation and preparations are now in place for the Gold level of the award

Travel and transport

  • A range of travel and transport benefits are available to employees including business mileage reimbursement and access to free travel on the Metro, Shields ferry and the Sunderland to Newcastle rail line for Council business
