Summer Parade 2019

The biggest carnival of its kind in the North East, the hugely popular South Tyneside Festival Summer Parade takes place on Saturday 6 July.

We will be heading to a galaxy far, far away with this year's event as the theme is Space Fantasy.

Expect to be hugely impressed with amazing costumes, fantastic floats and fabulous song and dance as the parade makes its way from South Shields Town Hall to Bents Park at South Shields Seafront, where the fun will continue with even more entertainment all afternoon long.

Get into the carnival spirit
Building on the success of previous year's events South Tyneside Council, and creative production company Creative Seed, are pulling out all the stops for another huge spectacular this year.

Expect to see in the parade giant avatar heads, aliens flying over planets, winged creatures, spaceships and lots of sci-fi characters, all of which (and more) will be set to a backdrop of colour, fun and a vibrant carnival atmosphere.

More than 2,000 people will be taking part, a lovely mix of professional carnival artists from around the country joining a huge cast of equally talented community groups and people from across the region.

The parade begins at 1pm outside South Shields Town Hall, before travelling along Fowler Street and Ocean Road to South Shields Seafront and Bents Park, where there will be a fantastic afternoon of free entertainment to enjoy.

Party in the Park
The fun continues all afternoon with lots of fantastic themed activities and entertainment at Bents Park.

We're delighted to announce that joining the party at Bents Park will be the amazing dancing Stormtroopers, Boogie Storm, who of course wowed audiences when they appeared on Britain's Got Talent. See dancing slinkies from Australian theatre group, Bedlam Oz, witness Helioscope featuring an acrobat suspended beneath a helium balloon, and come face to face with Titan the Robot. Hear some of Elton John's biggest hits when Gary Setterfield, who found fame on Stars in Their Eyes and often regarded as the UK's number one tribute to the Your Song singer, takes to the stage. There's even more music from Sound Divide in the beer tent, or the kids can take part in some fantastic space-themed children's craft activities.

There's lots more to enjoy during the afternoon, it's certainly going to be a cosmic adventure to remember!

The Summer Parade is brought to you by South Tyneside Council, with support from our sponsors Port of Tyne, Colmans Seafood Temple, South Tyneside College, the Sea Hotel, and our media partner BBC Newcastle. The Summer Parade is also kindly supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
