Top Accolade for South Tyneside Parks

South Tyneside is celebrating after two parks retained prestigious quality awards placing them among the best in the country.

Both West Park in Jarrow and South Marine Park in South Shields have received the sought after Green Flag again this year.

Green Flag Awards are handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy and recognise and rewards parks of the highest quality. Both parks stood out after impressing the judges with excellent facilities including well managed green space and amenities.

Councillor Nancy Maxwell, Lead Member for Area Management and Community Safety at South Tyneside Council, said: "This is really great news for the Borough.

"The Green Flag award is not given out lightly. Having the flag flying overhead is a sign that the park boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained, is clean, safe and has excellent visitor facilities.

"With our parks providing the perfect summer spot for people to enjoy the outdoors, having quality green space is more important than ever."

Keeping West Park and South Marine Park looking at their best is joint effort between South Tyneside Council and the Friends of West Park Jarrow and the Friends of North and South Marine Parks groups.

Councillor Maxwell added: "I would particularly like to express my thanks to all the hard working council staff, volunteers and to the local Friends of the parks groups who help to maintain the parks and have made these awards possible. They have all done an excellent job and I am so pleased that they have received national recognition."

In total this year, a record-breaking 1,883 parks and green spaces across the UK have met the tough criteria demanded by the award.

International Green Flag Award scheme manager, Paul Todd said: "We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, with more Green Flags awarded this year than last year.

"Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We are proud to have so many wonderful green spaces in the UK for people to enjoy, and hope that next year, we award even more flags."
