Drama Performance Aims to Keep Young People Safe

A theatre production which highlights the dangers of child sexual exploitation, online grooming and social media will be shown across secondary schools in South Tyneside next week (16 - 20 July).

Is This Your Story? has been commissioned by the Local Safeguarding Children Board, in partnership with Northumbria Police and the Customs House.

The drama is based on the real life experiences of a boy and girl who were subject to exploitation and uses genuine police interviews.

Councillor Moira Smith, Lead Member for Children, Young People and Families, said: "Feedback we received from young people who saw the drama last year was extremely positive. By using North East actors and referencing local places, we have helped young people to appreciate that, sadly, child sexual exploitation does happen in the region.

"While we would prefer to not have to make our young people aware of this subject, we do have a duty to protect them. The real-life scenarios highlighted in the drama aim to make our young people aware of the dangers around child sexual exploitation, social media, grooming, consent and relationships so that they can better protect themselves."

The drama will be shown to around 2,000 14 - 16 -year-olds at all secondary schools in the Borough.

On Wednesday 18 July there is a performance of the drama for parents and carers. This will be held at Boldon Community Centre, New Road Boldon Colliery, NE35 9DS.

The performance will start at 6pm and is free. To book a place email Lynn.Hodson@southtyneside.gov.uk or phone (0191) 4246512.
