Repairs Service Reaps Reward

South Tyneside Homes has won a prestigious national award for a 'five-star' repairs service.

The company's Repairs team scooped first prize at the Housing Heroes Awards 2018 in the Development or Maintenance Team of the Year category.

The award recognises the delivery of efficient and high quality development and maintenance programmes against a background of challenging financial times.

The team's winning submission centred around how they managed to reduce the annual repairs spend by more than £1.5million during 2017-18, while at the same time achieving a 6.5 per cent increase in customer satisfaction.

Councillor Ed Malcolm, Chairman of South Tyneside Homes' board, said: "This is a fantastic accolade and testament to the commitment and dedication of the team, which has led to them exceeding all their targets while working in a very tight financial envelope.

"The team has done some fantastic work over the last year - carrying out more than 83,000 repairs - and are a real valuable asset to the organisation.

"This award is thoroughly deserved."

The team was challenged to reduce the 102,000 repairs to a target of 85,000 whilst maintaining the average cost of repairs and customer satisfaction levels. They surpassed this with 83,500 repairs, with a reduction in the cost of a repair to £75.

Housing Heroes were looking for a team that could demonstrate that it had delivered a 'five star' maintenance service.

The award was presented at a ceremony in Manchester last week.

The Housing Heroes awards, now in its 10th year, is organised jointly by Inside Housing and the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH).
