Hello there, I'm Laura Lowes and I'm a Lifeguard based at Hebburn Central.
I have worked here since it opened in June 2015, after transferring across from Hebburn Baths. I work a weekend shift and sometimes cover during the week as and when required.
My role is to look after the health and safety requirements of all customers using our facility and thankfully, I have only ever had to dive into the pool twice to assist when someone has got into difficulty!
My first task of the day is to carry out an alarm check to make sure everything is in working order in case of an emergency. Next up is to check the toilet and changing areas to ensure these are clean and tidy ready for our customers arrival, before moving on to the pools to ascertain that they are all set up for the day ahead.
When on poolside I work on four 20 minute rotations; observing from the chair, covering an L-shape around the Main Pool, an L-shape around the Teaching Pool and Bubble Pools, followed by cleaning.
I also have to attend regular staff training sessions in order to keep my qualification up-to-date.
My favourite part of my job is working with my colleagues as part of a team and meeting members of the public; both of which are key to my role.
As well as being a Lifeguard, I also work as a casual Sports Coach for South Tyneside Council's Sport and Leisure Service, delivering a range of sporting activities and games for children across the Borough during the school holidays. I have also recently graduated from University after completing a Childhood Studies Degree.
For those of you I haven't met yet, I look forward to meeting you in the future.
