South Tyneside Council's website has been named as one of the best in the country by an independent professional body.
Independent public sector IT association SOCITM (the Society of Information Technology Management) gave the website the highest possible four star rating, placing it in the top ten per cent of local authority websites in the country.
The Council's website was one of just 36 from 416 websites across the country, and the only one in the region, to achieve a four star rating in the Better Connected report.
The website was redesigned last year by the Council's in-house Web Team to make it easier to access from mobile devices. It improved on its three star rating from last year and scored highly for social care information and ease of use on mobile phones.
Councillor Ed Malcolm, Lead Member for Resources and Innovation, said: "With more than half of our residents now accessing our website from their phone or tablet this news is welcome recognition that the redesign of the website has been a resounding success.
"By putting the user experience at the heart of the redesign, we are successfully encouraging people to manage more of their business online."
The rating was based on an assessment of a customer's journey in managing a selection of tasks online. These included finding how to apply for housing to requesting a social care assessment for an older person.
Councillor Malcolm added: "While this is very good news, we are not complacent. We are already working to offer an improved personalised online experience for our residents to enable them to manage all their online business on the go from their phone or tablet."
The website has also been nominated in two categories in the SOCITM Better Connected awards which will be held later this month in Birmingham.
