South Shields Handball is a 'satellite club' of the Newcastle Vikings Handball Club, the first developmental handball club in the North East of England which was founded in September 2012 in the immediate legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The club has a mission to grow handball in the North East of England while contributing to community development through this fast-growing, action-packed sport, with a view to sustaining handball teams for different age groups and genders, taking part in the English handball leagues and British tournaments.
Newcastle Vikings Handball Club is the first Clubmark-accredited handball club in the country, recognising the club's high quality standards in club management, including coaching and child welfare as well as promoting best practice on- and off-court in introducing handball to school children and the wider community. They also train on Wednesday evenings at Hedleys Sport in Killingworth, North Tyneside (juniors 7-8pm, seniors 8-10pm).
The Vikings' men's and women's senior teams currently play in the England Handball Association's North Regional Development Leagues and play their home league and cup matches at Temple Park Leisure Centre, as well as hosting annual handball tournaments at the South Shields venue and an emerging North East league.
