The Word, 45 Market Place, South Shields, NE33 1JF
After careful consideration, South Tyneside Council have taken the decision to close South Tyneside leisure centres and libraries, including The Word until further notice.
Following this decision, and the Government's advice for those who are within the at-risk categories to limit non-essential contact for social distancing measures, we will be cancelling all programmed events up to and including 14 June. We will make all necessary refunds and ask that you are patient whilst our staff work through this process. We will be contacting all artists and writers.
Library borrowers are advised to keep hold of books until the libraries re-open. No fines will be charged. Libraries users can still access online library services and the Home Readers Library Service will continue to operate as normal. Find out more at libraries.
The Word will reopen when it is deemed safe to do so.
The Word is located within the heart of South Shields Town Centre adjacent to the Market Place. You can park for free for up to 3 hours (you must still get a ticket from the machine) and it is only a short walk from many other local attractions, including the seafront (which boasts Haven Point, The Dunes, Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, North & South Marine Park as well as an award-winning beach), South Shields Museum & Art Gallery, Arbeia Roman Fort and The Customs House.
