Heritage Open Days - St Paul's Church and Monastic Site

Heritage Open Days - St Paul's Church and Monastic Site
St Pauls Church
10:30am to 3:30pm

St. Paul's Church and Monastic site, originally the home of the Venerable Bede (the 'Father of English Learning'), contains a well preserved Saxon chancel and Norman tower and the remains of a Benadictine monastery.

The church is one of the oldest in Britain and retains it's dedication stone dating from 685AD - unique among English churches. The chancel, originally a separate chapel dating from 671, boasts three original windows, one containing Saxon glass which is said to be the oldest stained glass window in the UK.

The original Saxon monastery was once the home of the Venerable Bede, monk, priest, scholar and polymath, whose works, on a variety of subjects, were widely read and sought after throughout Europe.

The scriptorium at Jarrow was also renowned throughout Christendom for the books produced there, the most famous of which is the Codex Amiatinus - the earliest known complete copy of the Vulgate (the Bible) in in the Laurentian Library in Florence.

No pre-booking required.
