South Tyneside people can make a big splash at Hebburn pool later this month to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Relief, as part of Swimathon 2003.
Hebburn Pool is one of over 500 swimming pools across the country taking part in Swimathon 2003 between 17th - 23rd March. The event annually attracts 35,000 swimmers of all ages, from grannies to grandchildren and last year alone raised a staggering £2.2 million for Macmillan Cancer Relief and the Swimathon Foundation.
The popular swimming pool, in Campbell Park Road, is putting on a number of exclusive Swimathon sessions for local swimmers during the of the week. This year a team of lifeguards from Hebburn the pool will be attempting to beat a team of Tri-athletes from the NE31 Tri-club.
Swimmers can sign up for one of seven challenges - 'Swimathon' (individual 5000m), 'Half Swimathon' (individual 2500m), 'Relay Swimathon' (5000m for 3 - 5 people), 'Fun Swimathon' (individual 1500m), 'Team Swimathon' (team of up to six people swimming 5,000m) or 'Simply Swim' (for those that want to take part, but cannot make any of the official Swimathon sessions). This year there is also the 'Endurance Swimathon' (individual 10,000m).
Since the event began 17 years ago, more than 410,000 swimmers have swum in excess of 550,000 miles - the equivalent of swimming round the Earth 22 times! In doing so, Swimathon swimmers have raised over £17 million for 32 different charities.
