Good Employers Commended In National Award

Two South Tyneside councillors have helped their employers win special awards in a national competition which attracted entries from across the country.

The Good Employers Award 2003 is an annual event organised by The Improvement and Development Agency (I&DeA) which recognises employers who are flexible with the working arrangements of councillors, allowing them to carry out their roles in local government.

At a prestigious awards ceremony held in London, Durham Colliery Mechanics Trust won a Highly Commended award in the under 50 employees category after being nominated by Councillor Jim Perry, Ward Councillor for Primrose in South Tyneside.

Also Stagecoach North East from Sunderland were Highly Commended in the 50 1,000 employees section after being nominated by Councillor Steven Forster, Ward Councillor for Biddick Hall

Councillor Perry, who chairs the Neighbourhood Services Scrutiny Committee, said: "There is a great deal of commitment involved in being a Councillor as our duties can often overlap with our regular employment and to successfully carry out both roles an understanding, flexible employer is vital. I am thankful that Durham Colliery Mechanics Trust, where I have worked for several years, have supported me throughout my time as Ward Councillor for Primrose in South Tyneside and look forward to the same in the future."

Councillor Forster, Lead Member for Social Care and Health, added: "Councillors have a vital role to play in leading local communities, strengthening local democracy and securing excellent local services. Working for a company that supports its employees when serving as locally elected councillors, as Stagecoach North East has done for me, deserve recognition and thanks."

"In return, these organisations benefit from the range of skills and understanding that Councillors develop as a result of their public service."

Held at Local Government House in Westminster and sponsored by the Guardian newspaper, this is the first time in the history of the competition that two separate employers from the same Borough have been recognised.
