Work starts this week (Wednesday 10th April) on the reconstruction of one of the busiest local roads in South Shields.
The section of Boldon Lane from Stanley Street to the Stanhope Road junction will be reconstructed and local traffic along this busy bus route and local shopping area will be severely disrupted, especially at peak times.
The work is expected to take ten weeks. Every effort has been made to inform local residents and businesses. Information signs are in place at the location and advance warning signs will be placed at strategic junctions in South Shields advising road users of delays.
The reconstruction and the widening and realignment of footways is essential. The main carriageway is in need of total reconstruction and re-surfacing. The work is costing £152,000.
At the same time a scheme is being carried out to improve the back lanes and car parking at the rear of the shops in Boldon Lane and the top of Stanhope Road. This is costing £40,000 and will also include upgraded street lighting.
The improvements to the side streets and back lanes have been the subject of a public consultation exercise. The overall plans have been welcomed by local people.
Temporary traffic signals will be in operation from Monday 15th April and single way working will cause congestion and delays. Temporary road closures will be required at times at the junctions of Stoddart Street and Straker Terrace.
Prior to the start of the work a separate scheme is being completed to put traffic control and traffic claming measures in place in Brinkburn Street, Brabourne Street and Stoddart Street and various back streets. Road humps and width restrictions are designed to stop traffic "rat running" to avoid the road works.
A Council spokesman said: "The reconstruction of this section of Boldon Lane is long overdue and when completed, will enhance road safety and pedestrian facilities. The residential areas of Brinkburn Street, Stoddart Street and Brabourne Street will benefit from traffic calming measures and improved car and cycle parking provision. Additional street lighting is to be provided in East and West Back Brabourne Street and street lighting in Stanley Street is to be upgraded."
