South Tyneside is celebrating Europe Day on Thursday ( 9th May) with a reception to raise the profile of European benefits, especially to young people.

Opportunities presented by Europe will on display at the Customs House in South Shields. The event will also celebrate the success of the Borough in obtaining European Funding and project sponsors will display details of their EU Funded projects, many of which benefit young people in the Borough.

The Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Alan Kerr and his wife Pat will welcome MEP Dr Barbara O'Toole, Council Leader, Councillor Paul Waggott and Lead Member for Regeneration, Councillor Jim Harper.

The Customs House Community Choir and Youth Gospel Choir will perform at the reception which will also provide an opportunity for everyone with an interest in the issues of the Borough to discuss what is available.

The Mayor says: "Europe Day is an annual celebration of the diversity of cultures within Europe, and is held on May 9th. It is an opportunity to reflect on modern day Europe and the European Union and to bring the people of Europe, wherever they live, closer to each other. I hope this event in South Tyneside helps to bring new opportunities to our young people."
