Award for Bents Park

It's official - Bents Park in South Shields is the public's favourite community area across South Tyneside and Sunderland.

Bents Park and its huge programme of events won the title in the What's On Where Awards run by the Shields Gazette and Sunderland Echo in the category of Best Park or Community Area.

The latest accolade is further confirmation of the popularity of South Tyneside Council's events programme which offers a stunning array of music, activities and entertainment.

Councillor Alan Kerr, Deputy Leader of South Tyneside Council with responsibility for Culture and Leisure, said: "This award is wonderful news - not least because the award was won on public votes.

"From the free Summer Festival to Armed Forces Day, live music to family fun, Bents Park is at the very heart of our annual programme of activities."

He added: "The exciting line-up of events in and around Bents Park attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Borough which we estimate is worth more than £200 million to South Tyneside.

"However, this award recognises that the events are equally valued by residents and those who live nearby so this award means a great deal on that front."

The award follows on from last year's success when South Tyneside Council scooped a silver award in the Best Tourism Event category of the North East England Tourism Awards for its three-month long free Summer Festival - much of which was held in Bents Park.

This year the park will again be the venue for a three-month line-up of live music, open air concerts and family-friendly activities which is set to be bigger and better than ever before.

In addition, the park will again be the focus of activities to mark Armed Forces Day and the historic commercial vehicle rally will once again be held there.

Other South Tyneside attractions to win in the What's On Where Awards were The Dunes which carried off the title of Children's venue of the Year, the Little Haven Hotel in South Shields which was named Guest House of the Year and the Jarrovians Rugby Union Football Club which won the Social Club of the Year Award. Ray Spencer, Executive Director of the Customs House in South Shields was also awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award.
