The new Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear Mrs Susan Winfield OBE visited South Shields Town Hall this week.
Mrs Winfield, who became the new Lord Lieutenant last month following the retirement of Sir Nigel Sherlock, was welcomed by the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside, Councillor Fay Cunningham and Stella Matthewson.
Mrs Winfield has lived and worked in Tyne and Wear all her life and has held a number of national positions. Her career in the Probation Service saw her become Deputy Chief Probation Officer in Northumbria. More recently, she was Chair of Sunderland Teaching Primary Care Trust and High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear.
Her role as Lord Lieutenant is to act as Her Majesty's representative of Tyne and Wear and uphold the dignity of the Crown. This will involve arranging Royal visits and escorting members of the Royal Family, presenting honours, medals and awards and swearing in new magistrates.
The Mayor said: "It was a pleasure and an honour to meet Mrs Winfield and discuss ways in which our two offices can continue to work together."
