National Recognition for Council

South Tyneside Council has been highlighted by a national newspaper as being in the best local authorities in Britain.

The Daily Telegraph rated the council sixth nationwide in an article highlighting 'outstanding local authorities that will bring a smile to every homeowner'.

'Britain's Top 20 Best Councils' identified areas where homeowners benefit from good local services. South Tyneside was the only Council in the North East to be placed in this prestigious league table which acknowledged that homeowners are likely to get the benefit of good local services from the Top 20.

The article, in the newspaper's property section, singled out South Tyneside Council's award-winning website.

Councillor Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council, said: "Being amongst the Top 20 Councils in the country is a great accolade which reflects our commitment to making the Borough a fantastic place to live, invest and bring up families

"I am particularly proud that we were the only authority in the North East to be highlighted.

"With 405 Councils in Great Britain, being in the Top 20 is praise indeed. However, we cannot and will not get complacent. We will continue to deliver great local services for the people of the Borough."

South Tyneside Council provides a wide range of services to residents across the borough from schools and social care to leisure and libraries and everything in between.

Five years into its 'Shaping our Future' 20 year vision, South Tyneside Council has achieved record infrastructure investment, increased jobs, best ever exam results and over £100m efficiencies - whilst still increasing resident satisfaction.

The Council was also identified as being the best performing municipal borough in England in the latest Local Government Ombudsman's Report, with the lowest proportion of complaints upheld. While complaints have been more than halved, the Council's 'residents first' policy has also seen a 28 per cent rise in compliments.
