Councillor Ernest Gibson, The Mayor of South Tyneside popped into the South Shields-branch of travel agents, Thomas Cook to talk with staff about their recent office refurbishment.

The office is located in the Denmark Centre in the heart of South Shields, and has served local people with holiday packages for a number of years.  It has twelve staff members with a total of 135 years combined travel experience in-store. The South Shields office has been in its current location since mid the 80s.

The Mayor took the opportunity to speak with the Thomas Cook team about their support and involvement in South Shields 365.  This is the Council's regeneration masterplan to create a five to ten year vision to make South Shields an exciting destination every day of the year.

The Mayor said: "South Shields town centre has a great blend of traditional and nationally renowned shops that provides people with a good shopping experience; and this will only get better with the realisation of South Shields 365.

"It's also companies like Thomas Cook championing the regeneration campaign that will make it a huge success, for local people, businesses and visitors to the Borough."

Rachael Baldwin, Customer Service manager for Thomas Cook, South Shields, said: "It's really important that somebody as prominent in the local community as The Mayor is seen to be supporting businesses in the area. We encourage any worthwhile schemes such as South Shields 365 that helps to attract new customers to the High Street and get more local people to use shops on their own door step."
