Changes to Council structure

The Proper Officer must publish the number of signatures needed on a petition for a referendum on whether the Borough should change from a Leader and Cabinet system to a Mayor and Cabinet or a Committee system.

This number equals 5% of the local government electors registered in the Borough on 15 February each year.

The number, to be used for verification of any petitions presented to South Tyneside Council, between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2022 is:


A new number will be published in February 2022. If this new number is less than 5693, then that number will be used between 15 February 2022 and 31 March 2022.
