South Tyneside Local Offer

What is the Local Offer?

The Local Offer provides information for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) and their parents or carers in a single place.

It gives information on what services children, young people and their families can expect from a range of local agencies, including education, health and social care. Knowing what is out there gives you more choice and more control over what support is right for your child.

The Local Offer provides information on a number of things, including:

  • special educational provision
  • health provision
  • social care provision
  • other educational provision
  • training provision
  • travel arrangements for children and young people to schools, colleges and early years education
  • preparing for adulthood, including housing, employment and leisure opportunities

The Local Offer has been produced jointly by South Tyneside Council, Social Care and Health Services in partnership with parents and carers. It aims to help us to make sure that we are providing the sort of services that families have told us they need.

You said, we did

Over the course of 2014/2015 we have invited feedback to help improve the South Tyneside Local Offer on the council website.

Below are some of the suggestions we have received and what we have done in response.

You wanted more information about SEN in schools
We worked with our schools to advise on their SEN Information reports and made sure every school website published the relevant information on their website and our own,  South Tyneside Local Offer.

You said it was sometimes difficult to find information on specific services for specific conditions
We have invested in developing a new search facility for the South Tyneside Local Offer to enable a more specific search for services. We are currently looking to make further improvements to the site search.

You said some of the language used to describe categories of SEN was difficult to understand
We listened and have changed the words that were identified.

You wanted to see up to date information about benefits for people with disabilities/additional needs
We have provided more information about this on our website, please see Money and benefits .

You wanted more information about the role of the SENCO in school and the support offered by Speech and Language Therapy
In response we have provided more information on the website about Speech and Language Therapy and How schools organise SEN support.

You said some of the information about community support groups did not fully reflect the range of support in the borough
We reviewed the information and ensured that the most up-to-date information was provided.

You said you wanted information on SEN support grouped in relation to the age of the children/young people
We reorganised the our information so it is available in three age ranges 0-5 years, 5 -16 years and post 16. For more information please see Education.

You said you wanted it to be more appealing with more images
We added colourful images to sub-menu pages for example SEN and Disabilities.

You told us that some of the pages included to much text
We reviewed the information on those pages and where appropriate we cut down the text ensuring no essential information was lost.

You said you would like to be able to access the Local Offer on smart phones
The South Tyneside Local Offer is mobile enabled and we are currently working with the IT team to further developed your experience on smart phones.

You said you wouldn't usually look in 'Support in school' for over 16 support
We have renamed the page 'Support in schools and further education' to make it clearer to you where you would find information about support for over 16's.

You said you can not see easily where to go to find a list of schools
We will move the list of schools in a more prominent place on the website to ensure it is easy to find.

You said you can spend a long time waiting for a word document to download
Work is currently being carried out to improve the website's speed.

Positive feedback

We have also received positive feedback on the work carried out so far for the South Tyneside Local Offer:

  • The pages are easy to navigate
  • The website is clear and easy to us
  • The layout is very easy to use
  • There is no unwanted information
  • Overall it is a pleasant experience
  • The information is really is to find
