Specialist Health Visitor for Children with Additional Support Needs (0-19 years)

A specialist public health practitioner who has expertise in child development and disability.

The role involves working with you and professionals from health (including paediatricians, health visitors, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, school nurse, family nurse partnership etc.), and agencies to make sure your child's care is provided in a coordinated, timely manner, and is centred on the individual needs of your child and family.

This is especially important at key transition stages such as starting or changing nursery or school, and moving on into adulthood.

They may also be involved in your child's Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan or Single Plan.

Support that can be provided:

  • support during and after your child's diagnosis 
  • they may be there when your child is your being assessed and may be able to help you with issues related to your child's additional needs
  • working with you, health, education and other relevant agencies to help your child achieve the best outcomes possible
  • liaison with you and services through Early Support, Common Assessment Framework (CAF), and panels
  • attending steering groups, forums and panels that focus on children with additional support needs
  • delivering training sessions for various professionals, families and establishments
  • leading on the process of sharing new born screening results
  • leading on the delivery of the Care of Next Infant (CONI) programme for families who have had a previous sudden infant death
