Music in schools

Music opportunities

There is a varied range of opportunities available, including;

  • small group lessons in school with the traditional brass, woodwind and string instruments
  • whole class lessons in ukulele, recorder and penny whistle to name a few
  • free or low charge ensemble opportunities for children to showcase and build on the skills learnt

If you would like your child to participate, contact their school to confirm the opportunities available in school. Each school has their own charging policy for music tuition.

About us

South Tyneside Council recognises the importance of providing children and young people with access to high quality, affordable musical opportunities.

We encourage maximum participation in music making activities. We try to reach as many children and young people as possible, nurturing talent through excellence in teaching and learning and offering opportunities for ensemble or orchestral performances.

We are partnered with Gateshead Music Service. Gateshead and South Tyneside Music Hub (GSTMEH) is funded by Arts Council England (ACE) with both music services providing specialist delivery and services to schools, community groups and ensembles.

We are keen to deliver the best possible music opportunities for students in the borough.
