There are two types of heat pumps available:
- Ground source
Uses pipes buried in the garden to extract heat from the ground
- Air source
Absorbs heat from the outside air
Both are usually used to heat radiators, under floor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in the home.
Cost and maintenance
A typical air source heat pump can range from about £6000 to £10,000 including installation. A typical ground source heat pump can range from about £9000 to £17,000. Running costs for both will vary depending on a number of factors - including the size of your home and how well insulated it is.
These systems are eligible for a grant to install under the Renewable Heat Premium Payment scheme. It is unconfirmed whether it will be included as part of the Renewable Heat Incentive.
