Local Plan - Development Plan Document

The Local Plan is our statutory development plan for the Borough.

It is the implementation plan for the land-use objectives of our South Tyneside Vision 2011-2031 and supports our Shaping our Future Strategy.

Together with national planning policy and guidance, the Local Plan:

  • sets out the spatial strategy and policies for the sustainable use of land and buildings in the Borough
  • lays the foundations for regeneration and economic growth, and
  • forms the basis for assessing all planning applications and other development proposals.

Our current Local Plan is our existing South Tyneside Local Development Framework.

Current Updates

As part of the work involved in preparing the new Local Plan, we have updated our Sustainability Appraisal (SA) Scoping Report. 

The South Tyneside Local Plan Sustainability Appraisal (SA) Scoping Report is the appraisal of the economic, environmental and social effects of a Local Plan from the outset of the preparation process to allow decisions to be made that accord with sustainable development. This report sets out the scope of what will be included within the Sustainability Appraisal of the emerging South Tyneside Local Plan.

In addition to SA, Local Plans must comply with the requirements of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), in accordance with European Directive 2001/42/EC, to ensure that environmental effects are given full consideration alongside social and economic issues when preparing the Development Plan. Therefore, the requirements of the SEA Directive have been incorporated into the SA scoping process as can be seen in the Sustainability Framework of the report.

The SA will also address the need for the council to undertake an Equalities Impact Assessment and includes a Health Impact Assessment.

The South Tyneside Local Plan Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report is being consulted upon from 13 August 2018 until 17 September 2018.

Our new Local Plan is being prepared over the next few years and will comprise of:

Any community-initiated Neighbourhood Planning will also form part of the statutory development plan for those areas of the Borough.

Supporting advisory guidance in supplementary planning documents will be reviewed as necessary.
