We don't think there is such a thing as a typical foster carer.
Foster carers in South Tyneside come from all walks of life. Single or married, employed or unemployed, home owner or living in rented accommodation, they are all different as are the children and young people that they care for.
The fostering service welcomes gay, lesbian and transgender applicants and will support individuals throughout this process.
The fostering service also welcomes enquiries from people whose first language is not English and will support individuals throughout this process.
When wouldn't be the best time to foster?
Prospective applicants will be advised not to pursue an application where they have recently faced significant challenges within their family, such as newly formed partnerships or reconstituted families, serious illness, pregnancy, separation or bereavement.
Issues relating to historical or current legal proceedings (e.g. in relation to offences or financial concerns) will be considered on an individual basis.
Is there an age limit?
You must be over 25 to foster (this may be younger if you have a previous relationship with the child you are to foster).
There is no particular upper age limit, but you must be able to care for and meet the needs of a child or young person. All applicants will have to undergo a medical assessment.
So don't rule yourself out before speaking to us.
What skills would I need?
All you need are life skills and to be able to provide a safe and secure loving home.
Life skills are simply qualities you will already have developed through life experiences. The assessment and training process will help identify and develop these qualities. Find out more about the Steps to becoming a foster carer.
