The next service, held in conjunction with South Tyneside District Hospital, is on Saturday 11 May 2019 at 3pm.

There will be hymns, prayers and readings as part of the service. All families and friends of parents who have experienced a baby's death are welcome to attend.

Boulder memorials

Located around the perimeter of Whitburn Cemetery Chapel only, these granite boulder-shaped plaques are suitable to commemorate the memory of someone not buried in the Cemetery. For example, someone who was cremated or buried elsewhere. They bear an inscription to your loved one and an illustration or photograph may also be added.

The plaques are purchased for a ten year period and may also be renewed for further ten years at the appropriate time.

Cremated Remains Sanctum

Located in the secluded setting of the Rest Garden, the Sanctum Memorial is an above ground storage facility for cremated remains. Up to two sets of cremated remains can be housed within the memorial. However, you may purchase a sanctum memorial without placing cremated remains in it if you prefer.

The polished granite plaque is engraved with an inscription of your choice in memory of your loved one. A bronze posy vase for floral tributes is attached to the plaque and you may also add an illustration or photograph.

The memorial is purchased for a period of ten years, and this period can be renewed at the appropriate time.

Memorial cards and books

Memorial cards and books are available for friends and relatives who may wish to have a copy of the inscription in the Roll of Remembrance.

Memorial cards contain only one inscription, and there are three designs available.

Memorial books are hand bound with suede covers and can contain many inscriptions.

Memorial Garden Seats

Garden seats are located throughout the grounds of the crematorium and are intended for the use of all people who visit the grounds.

It is possible to dedicate one of these seats to a loved one by attaching a bronze plaque bearing an inscription.

The seats are purchased for a period of 10 years and can be renewed at the appropriate time.

Memorial Rose plaque

There are eight rose beds, each containing a different variety of rose, in the area next to the Memorial Wall. The beds are enclosed by a wooden fence onto which a bronze plaque may be attached. The plaques bear an inscription of your choice in memory of your loved one. You may choose which rose bed your plaque is placed beside.

There is no facility to attach personal memorabilia but floral tributes can be placed in the vases that are provided on the grass nearby.

The plaques are purchased for a period of five years and can be renewed at the appropriate time.

Roll of Remembrance

You can commemorate the memory of a lost loved one by placing an entry in the Roll of Remembrance. The roll is hand-made with leaves lettered by highly skilled craftsmen. It is the only permanent memorial available at the crematorium.

The Roll of Remembrance is displayed in the Chapel of Remembrance which houses a large ornate stained glass window and tiered vase stands, where floral tributes may be left.

The pages are are displayed for a full week on and around the anniversary of the death in this sequence:

Roll of Remembrance display dates:

  • 1st to 8th of the month
  • 9th to 15th of the month
  • 16th to 23rd of the month
  • 24th to 30th / 31st of the month

February only:

  • 1st to 7th of the month
  • 8th to 14th of the month
  • 15th - 21st of the month
  • 22nd to 28th / 29th of the month

Inscriptions can vary between two and eight lines. Inscriptions of five lines or more may also include an illustration of your choice.

Orders should be placed at least 6 months before the date of the anniversary.

In addition to placing an entry in the Roll, you can also order individual memorial cards and books to either keep at home or send to distant relatives or friends.

The Roll of Remembrance can also be viewed online, meaning it can be viewed every day of the year. This may be helpful to those who are unable to visit the crematorium.

Please note: Excessive humidity from the display of floral tributes has an effect on the pages of the Roll of Remembrance. At the end of each day we move the floral tributes to the Flower Chapel (opposite the main doors) where they remain for one week.

We also reserve the right to move floral tributes to an alternative location within the grounds of the crematorium during busy periods on health and safety grounds to avoid the risk of trips, slips and falls.
