Primary Care Trust

Who we are?

South Tyneside Primary Care Trust is the lead NHS organisation for planning and securing services to address the health needs of the residents of South Tyneside.

We were established in April 2002 and cover the same boundaries as the local authority. We employ around 400 staff, most working directly with patients and covering a wide variety of skills, trades and educational achievement.

We provide a wide range of high quality health services, including those traditionally offered by GP practices and health centres.

Our functions are to:

  • Improve the health of the local population, working in partnership with other organisations such as the local authority and voluntary and community sectors;
  • Develop primary and community services;
  • Commission hospital and community services.

As a PCT, we aim to make sure services fit the needs of people living in South Tyneside and give local health professionals like doctors and nurses more power in local decision making.
