Who we are?
South Tyneside Area Command is responsible for policing the whole of the Borough of South Tyneside. Politically the area encompasses a single local authority, namely South Tyneside Council and two parliamentary constituencies, those of South Shields and Jarrow.

Our overall aim is to reduce crime and the fear of crime, to promote safety and reduce disorder, whilst delivering a high quality service to all.

Our priorities are:

  • Reduce burglaries to people's homes and other premises
  • Reduce thefts of and thefts from motor vehicles
  • Tackle incidents of disorder particularly those involving young people
  • To take positive action against violent crime
  • Closely monitor and to take positive action in all cases of domestic violence
  • Increase arrests for drug dealing offences
  • Seek a positive result in all reports of racially motivated incidents
  • Further increase operational police officers patrolling the streets.

What we have to offer
South Tyneside Area Command is currently benefiting from the Governments Crime Fighting Fund, which will result in an increase in our establishment of 62 police officers.

We recognise that what the public of South Tyneside would like to see is a more visible police presence. To achieve this, we have already established a team of Community Beat Managers. These are Police Constables who are deployed in all of the 20 political wards within the Borough. This policy, together with our very strong partnerships, will enable us to tackle local problems, and find local solutions. In each Community Area Forum we hold monthly meetings, chaired by a Police Inspector, and invite partners who can really make a difference.

We work in co-operation with our communities and all other service agencies to effectively tackle crime and anti social behaviour, and to make South Tyneside a safer and more pleasant place to live and work. We are making great strides in targeting those people whose activities cause so much misery for the majority of law-abiding people. We remain optimistic that by sticking together, we can direct the misery back towards the criminals, and away from decent people.

Who we are in touch with.

We have long since recognised that we need to work with other agencies to achieve success. We will continue to work closely with our partners, including South Tyneside Council, in support of the Crime and Disorder Act. Together we are committed to adopting a problem solving approach, designed to identify and target the root cause of problems and to consider a variety of solutions to solve these issues.

Our role in the LSP

Current and planned strategies include:

  • Community Action Initiative to support problem solving projects and work with young people in the school system
  • Arson Task Force – a joint initiative with the Fire Service to address this problem area
  • Turning Point – a drug and alcohol referral scheme designed to rehabilitate addicts with a subsequent impact on crime reduction
  • Closer links with the Probation Service – targeting of the most dangerous and prolific offenders.
