Government Office for the North East
Who we are
Government Offices regionally bring together the activities and interests of different Government Departments within a single organisation. They were originally set up in 1994 and have been expanded over the years to provide a regional presence or carry out functions for:
- Communities and Local Government (CLG)
- Dept for Schools Families and Children (DCFS)
- Dept for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
- Dept for Transport (DFT)
- Dept for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR)
- Home Office (HO) - including Drugs Prevention Advisory Service (DPAS)
- Dept for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)
- Public Health Group
- Residential Training for Disabled People Unit
- Government News Network (GNN)
We work to deliver, influence and develop government programmes and initiatives at a regional and local level, by working in partnership with relevant organisations to meet local needs. Since the publication of the GO review our role is changing and together with the other eight Government Offices we aim to become a more streamlined, strategic network. GO-NE employs around 250 people.
What we have to offer?
We have links with most of the key organisations and partnerships in the region as well as our home Departments (e.g. DCFS). As a result we are well placed to give policy advice on a wide range of issues and we are able to feed back partner's views to Whitehall.
Who we are in touch with?
As our links to regional partners and Government Departments is so extensive it would be difficult to give a definitive list of contacts. It is probably easier to say that we are, or can be, in touch with all of the main organisations in the North East.
Our role in the LSP
Government Office for the North East will provide a direct channel of communication to Government and:
- Bring strategic knowledge of national and regional priorities and knowledge of best practice to bear on local priorities
- Work with local partners to improve the quality, relevance and analysis of information
- Work with central Government to bring coherence to national funding streams and priorities, ensuring the best use of public funding
- Aim to bring focus to the Local Area Agreement and play a part in delivery of local priorities
