In order to provide the most effective and efficient support the delivery of the Authority’s services are aligned in order to reflect the five district areas it serves. This approach enables the Fire and Rescue Authority to work closely with its partners and Local Authority’s to provide its services tailored to the needs and risks of the local communities we serve.

The Authority has two Community Fire Stations located within the boundaries of South Tyneside. Both Community Fire Stations work together and share resources to ensure that they effectively target the risks identified in South Tyneside. This includes the delivery of Home Fire Risk Assessments and a proactive approach to the prevention and education of fire related incidents.

The Authority is aware of its responsibilities to meet the wider needs of the communities it serves and its partners

For further information relating to the functions and set up of each station please contact the Station Manager or refer to the back page of this plan.

Overview of South Tyneside Local Authority Area

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority aim to create the safest community through the allocation of resources based on the risks identified in the census output areas throughout Tyne and Wear.  Within each of its five districts the Authority aims to work closely with its partners to provide support and guidance in tackling the risks that are important to each of the five individual Districts.

Within South Tyneside the Authority has identified a number of ward areas that are considered to be a high risk area, including Bede, Primrose, Fellgate and Hedworth. The Community Fire Stations allocate their resources to ensure the effective delivery of Home Fire Risk Assessments to target those properties identified at greatest risk.

Location of our Community Fire Stations

Through developing our work with partners and Local Authority’s it is hoped that we can share our information and allocate resources to tackle other issues that relate to the cause of fires and fire related injuries and deaths. However, it is important to consider the wider issues that the Authority is able to contribute to reducing. The area of South Tyneside provides the Authority and its partners with specific areas of risk that not only relate to fire but also road traffic incidents, water rescue and cliff rescue to name a few.

Each of the Authority’s District areas are responsible for providing effective prevention and response services to reduce the risk to life and property. The Authority recognise that each of the Districts have different risks and priorities to address in order to provide the safest community. In order to tackle the issues that are specific to the needs of the local area the Authority focuses on District priorities enabling the needs of the Districts to be addressed and met.

In order to develop a set of District priorities the Authority uses previous incident data to assess the occurrence of specific incident types in South Tyneside. Through negotiation between the District Managers, the Authority and local partners the following set of District priorities are agreed as key issues that need addressing in order to meet the needs identified within South Tyneside:

  • Reduce Arson related incidents

Work with our partners to reduce the potential and cause of deliberate fires, including vehicles, rubbish and property.
  • Reduce the number of primary fires and related fatalities and non-fatal casualties

Work with partners to focus on the reduction of dwelling fires and in particular those that originate in the kitchen.

Through the continuous work with our partners and the effective allocation of resources the Authority is confident that each of the District priorities will be achieved. The priorities will be reviewed on an annual basis through consultation with our partners, Community Fire Stations and the Fire and Rescue Authority.
